We all know chemicals are harmful and they can be in liquid, solid or gaseous form. The extent of damage to the eye depends on the degree of chemical exposure and how long they stay in the eye.
All chemical burns can be classified based on their PH value into acid burns, alkali burns and irritant burns.
Acid burns are dangerous but less dangerous than alkali burns, example of acidic chemicals that can cause burns are battery acids, vinegar, nail polish remover etc while examples of alkali are fertilizers, oven cleaners, baking soda, bleach, soaps.
They all have potentials of causing eye damage and vision loss if immediate care is not taken.

When harmful chemicals come in contact with the eye, it may cause a crucial pain thereby causing you to shut the eye, but this could cause more damage because the more you keep the chemical substance in the eye, the more harm it could cause to the eyes.
Therefore here are the steps you should carry out if chemical come in contact with your eyes.
°Flush the eye with pure water continuously for about 10 to 15 minutes.
°The water should be a running water such that it can flush the chemical away from the eye.
°You should remove your contact lens if you wearing any.
°You can apply lubricating eye drops on the eye.
Visit the eye clinic for a proper eye assessment.
Make conscious effort to avoid contact with chemicals and keep harmful substances out of reach of children.
