Dry Eyes
Dry eye disease is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes.
Causes
Dry eyes are caused by a variety of reasons that disrupt the healthy tear film.
○ Reduced tear production
Dry eyes can occur when you’re unable to produce enough water (aqueous fluid). Common causes of decreased tear production include:
▪︎Ageing
▪︎Autoimmune diseases, like ▪︎Sjogren’s syndrome
▪︎Radiation treatment
▪︎Diabetes
▪︎Vitamin A deficiency
○ Increased tear evaporation
The oil layer of the tear film smooths the tear surface and slows down the rate of evaporation. Faulty oil levels can cause the tears to evaporate too quickly.
Common causes of increased tear evaporation include:
▪︎Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid)
▪︎Blinking less often, which tends to occur when you’re concentrating during certain activities, such as while reading, driving or working at a computer
▪︎Vitamin A deficiency
▪︎Wind, smoke or dry air
Symptoms
▪︎A stinging
▪︎Burning sensation
▪︎ Feeling of dryness and soreness in the eyes
▪︎A feeling like sand in the eye
▪︎ Eye sensitivity to smoke or wind
▪︎Redness of the eyes
▪︎Difficulty keeping the eyes open
▪︎Eye fatigue after reading, even for a short time
▪︎Blurred vision
▪︎Sensitivity to light
