Keratoconus.
Keratoconus is a disease of the cornea.
The cornea is the clear outer layer at the front of the eye.
The cornea is the transparent dome-shaped structure that covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber. It may look dark in colour but it is actually transparent. It is the cornea that helps your eye to focus light so you can see clearly
So, What is Keratoconus?
keratoconus is an eye disorder in which the cornea gradually loses its thickness, thins out and bulges like a cone. Keratoconus is coined from the word “Kerat” which means cornea and “conus” which means cone-shape.
The cause of keratoconus is not known yet but research suggest that it could occur due to genetic and environmental factors.
The following can put you at the risk of developing Keratoconus;
-Having a family history of keratoconus
-Rubbing your eyes vigorously
-Having certain conditions, such as retinitis pigmentosa, Down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hay fever and asthma
Here are some of the symptoms of kerataconus –
- Blurred Vision
- Distorted vision (where straight lines look bent or wavy)
- Increased sensitivity to bright light and glare
- Difficulty driving at night.
- Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions
- Sudden worsening or clouding of vision
- Difficulty wearing soft contact lenses
There are varieties of treatment plan available for keratoconus, treatment plan depends on the stage of keratoconus. Some of the treatments includes the following;
- Use of therapeutic contact lenses.
- Use of tacs.
- Cornea transplant.
