WHAT IS VISUAL ACUITY?
If you have ever visited an eye clinic, you must have been requested to read up letters on a chart or an LCD screen located some distance away from you.
Ever wondered what the chat means or what it does?
It is simply a Visual Acuity chart that measures your eye’s ability to see.
So what is Visual Acuity?
A visual acuity test is an eye exam that checks how well you see the details of a letter or symbol from a specific distance.
The test is usually carried out in a well illuminated environment with the chart placed at a distance of 20ft (feet) or 6m (meters). The letters or numbers you are reading are called optotypes and they have specific shape dimension. Each line has a number code attached to them.
The generally accepted result of a good vision is 20/20 or 6/6. This implies you should be able to read the chart from top to the 8th line. However. having a Visual Acuity of 20/20 doesn’t mean the vision is perfect.
When someone has a low visual acuity, it can be due to refractive error or disease.
When next you see the Visual Acuity chart, we believe you have an idea of what it is now.
